This is kind of a rumor mill post but Engadget is reporting that two insiders have said that Google is planning on buying thousands of Verifone NFC payment terminals to install in New York and San Fransisco stores. Since the Nexus S is the only device that currently has an NFC chip one would think that Google knows that there are more coming int he next four to five months, given that is the stated time frame of the roll out in NYC and SF.
Engadet also recently noted an article from Bloomberg that says Google may be building their own payment system. From the article: “Google (GOOG) is considering building a payment and advertising service that would let users buy milk and bread by tapping or waving their mobile phones against a register at checkout, two people familiar with the plans say.”
“NFC could displace the cash register,” says Charles Walton, (related interview here) chief operating officer for NFC chipmaker Inside Secure. “This is going to come superfast.”
