Tuesday at the Senate Commerce Committee hearing on Wireless Issues and Spectrum Reform, Jeannine Kenney, a senior policy analyst at Consumers Union, told senators (pdf) that allowing a company such as AT&T to bid on available wireless spectrum would deal a death blow to competition in the wireless market.

AT&T Chief Executive Ed Whitacre and other network operator executives have effectively positioned their case, saying they need flexibility to charge content providers such as Google or Yahoo a higher fee for speedier service.

But others, such as Vint Cerf, argue that what AT&T really wants is to created a “tiered” internet, similar to cable television, where the carrier’s own content is given preferencial treatment and competitors are charged an access fee. Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore) has championed the cause on Net Neutrality.”
