Cable’s annual convention, The National Show, is rolling out the big guns in Atlanta this week. The battle for the $490-billion-a-year U.S. market for phone, Internet and TV services is heating up. The war between cable, satellite and phone companies is going nuclear, as people disconnect their landline phones in favor of cell phones or VoIP over cable.

US carriers have reportedly lost more than five million telephone customers to cable rivals Time Warner Cable, Comcast and Cox Communications over the last year. More than 1 million customers now use VoIP services developed by Sprint Nextel in tandem with cable companies. Sprint has forecast that some $1 billion will be generated by VoIP services by 2009.

By 2010, 55 percent of U.S. broadband households will subscribe to a triple-play or quadruple-play bundle, Parks Associates predicts. And, revenues from bundled services, most notably the quad-play, are expected to reach nearly $120 billion.”
