Ford, Bug Labs & OpenXC

At Techcrunch today, aside from the metadrama, Ford announced a partnership with Bug Labs to create an open source platform called OpenXC for in-car applications innovation. The two companies will work together to provide engineers, geeks and forward thinking companies a tool kit to use for hardware and software applications for the automobile.

Ford Evo: the future of connected cars

Ford has been on a roll and it continues with the IFA show in Berlin. Ford is showing off a concept car called the Evo. In addition to the stylish looks the EVo will be a truly connected car, with applications that link it to the home network as well as the power grid to manage everything from charging to entertainment.

Ford adds solar panels to electric car package

Ford and SunPower are teaming up to bring solar panels to buyers of Ford electronic vehicles. The solar panel will charge things other than the cars but the idea is to offset the power needed to charge the cars each night.

Ford migrates SYNC Applink to more cars

Ford announced that it will bring the SYNC Applink feature set to more vehicles this year and is expanding its developer network as it grow the number of apps available for in-car use. The current SYNC features main center around mobile integration and hands free calling but also offer some drive assist and entertainment offerings. As the developer community grows it will be interesting to see what other types of apps are allowed and become popular.

Ford to use Google Prediction API

Another Google I/O announcement: Ford will use Google’s Prediction API to improve fuel efficiency and provide a better overall driving experience. Ford has been a clear leader in the telematics space with its Sync program but now its stepping outside the bounds of its relationship with Microsoft to include some of Google’s tools in its array of smart car features.

Ford names top 25 EV cities

Not sure where Josie Garthwaite of GigaOM’s Earth2tech found this but Ford has just released its list of the top 25 US cities for electric vehicle “readiness.” Ford apparently developed its own matrix for judging each city and gave the most weight to private charging infrastructure.
